Following World War II, American artist Richard Allmand Blow helped Italy resurrect the dying, 16th-century Medici-era, mosaic art of pietra dura by introducing a fresh, new iconography, including Cubism, Surrealism, Metaphysical, and Mid-20th Century Modernism.
